What’s one of the first things you notice about someone when you meet them? Their smile, right? How do you get and keep a beautiful kissable smile? Flossing. It’s something that we can get in a hurry and forget to do, but now that we’re adults and there is no Mom around to remind us it might be good to remind ourselves of why we must remember to do it daily.
Flossing is one of those things that you take for granted and neglect until it’s too late. Did you know that up to 35% of your teeth aren’t reachable by even the best toothbrush? That’s why flossing is not just important, but essential to your oral health. It’s the only way to get under the gumline and between the teeth to rout out plaque. That’s why every time we go to the dentist we get nagged about it.
What is Plaque?
What is plaque, anyway? Plaque is actually produced by the bacteria that already lives in your mouth which feeds on sugar and produces acid that eats holes in your teeth that will eventually become cavities, so do your best to get sugar off your teeth as fast as possible, because plaque very quickly becomes tartar, and the only way that stuff comes off is a visit to the dentist. All that bacterial action not only looks nasty, but stinks too. That kind of nasty is not going to be getting much love action, you know? Whether you look good or bad is a choice on your part, because you are the Boss, remember? Taking care of yourself shows self-respect, which makes it possible for others to respect you.
Brush after meals and snacks, or chew sugar-free gum made with xylitol, which will help clear away sugar and food bits from your teeth. When you are on the go you can use flossers, which slip easily into a purse or wallet, you can also get travel size toothbrushes and paste to carry with you if you like.
Bare minimum you need to floss every night before brushing and going to bed. You definitely don’t want all that icky stuff growing moss in your mouth all night!
Water flossers work extremely well for people who have braces or other appliances in their mouths or for those of us with teeth that are very close together and are paranoid about getting floss stuck between our teeth, and they massage your gums and it feels really good, actually.
You only get one set of teeth in your lifetime, so take care of them. The alternative is embarrassing, expensive, and incredibly painful. Like, drop to the floor writhing painful. Besides, let’s face it, dental insurance doesn’t cover much at all beyond preventative care, so why create expensive and painful problems for yourself that you can completely prevent in less than 5 minutes a day? If you have trouble remembering, use a dry-erase marker and write a note on your mirror. It works great!
